Prayer for Ministers of the Gospel
StaffJuly 31, 2010
A thoughtful prayer for those who are tirelessly proclaiming the gospel and actively working out their calling as ministers of the gospel. Allow this prayer to encourage and refreshen your heart, as well as to drive you to pray for others whom you know are faithful servants of the gospel.
End of Life Issues
StaffJuly 29, 2010
As Christians, how should we respond to difficult end-of-life questions? How should the gospel inform our decisions? Atul Gawande has a well written essay where he raises some of the complexities of end-of-life questions in this week’s publication of the New Yorker.
No Atheists in Foxholes

How can churches incarnate the Gospel in their communities in touch economic times? Why do people from different socio-economic classes tend to be drawn to different types of churches?
Newsweek recently published an interesting article that talks about the relationship between the climate of the economy with church attendance. Below is an excerpt.
The interplay between prosperity—and poverty—and religious observance has become a recent fascination of a small number of economists and other social scientists, for understanding these patterns can help us better predict the future. Do hard times produce more fundamentalists? Do prosperous times produce more do-gooders? Will a lengthy economic slump pull people into the pews to pray for jobs and ladle soup for needier neighbors? Or will it keep people at home on the couch, nursing psychic wounds and cursing their creator?
An Atypical Response to Gang Violence
StaffJuly 27, 2010
The city of Boston is taking on a rather innovative approach to combatting gang violence. You can read more here.
Here's a quote from the article:
Officials say this plan is more unifying and comprehensive than past plans to combat violence with social services. It approaches gang violence as a public health concern rather than strictly a law enforcement issue, and it is structured as a long-term program.
The Moral Naturalists

Read the recent piece from David Brooks, which gives insights into the mind of the moral naturalist and their position.
Short-term Mission Trip vs. Long-term Missions
StaffJuly 26, 2010
There is ongoing discussion on the actual value of short-term mission trips and whether or not churches ought to reconsider sending their people to other parts of the world for weeks or months.
Here is a online conversation going on right now.
A helpful resource to consider reading is David Livermore's, Serving with Eyes Wide Open: Doing Short-term Missions with Cultural Intelligence.
Pastors Getting Out of the Office
StaffJuly 22, 2010
Justin Buzzard has written an insightful piece, entitled "Go to Where Your Men Work," which is directed at pastors on how to care for the men in their congregations. The title is a concise summary of what he is trying to communicate, but I particularly appreciated these words,
Always speak out against the “higher calling of ministry” idea if it surfaces. Three out of five times when I meet a man at his work he talks to me about how the work I’m doing as a pastor is “so much more important” than what he’s doing as a software engineer, financial analyst, etc. I always immediately crush and correct this unbiblical view of vocation. Your men need you to tell them that all work is a means of glorifying God, and that working for a church is not superior to working for Google. It’s your job to empower your men, to help them see the nobility of the work God has called them to do.
